Nature Center and Historic Jam Kitchen owned and operated by the Thornton W. Burgess Society
The Thornton W. Burgess Society is a non-profit educational organization founded in Sandwich in 1976 to carry on the pioneering work of author/naturalist Thornton Burgess [1874-1965]. Burgess was born and grew up in Sandwich, MA and went on to achieve national and international recognition for his children's stories of Peter Rabbit and friends that teach lessons of conservation and love of wildlife. The Society operates the Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen in East Sandwich, which is open to the public year-round offering natural history programs for all ages plus popular jam making workshops in its historic Jam Kitchen. The Society also manages the 133 acre East Sandwich Game Farm property under an agreement with the Mass. Division of Fisheries and Wildlife. This beautiful and diverse property is used by the Society for environmental education programs as well as for recreational purposes by the public for hiking, fishing, canoeing and kayaking.
Membership in the Burgess Society is open to all.

The Thornton W. Burgess Society was incorporated in 1976 as a non-profit environmental education organization.
What is your primary product or service?
Environmental Education to carry on the pioneering conservation work of author/naturalist Thornton W. Burgess [1874-1965], whose children's stories of Peter Rabbit, Reddy Fox, Jimmy Skunk and many others have taught lessons of conservation and love of wildlife to generations of children. Gift shop sales of our jams and other items help to support the many educational programs offered.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
The Burgess Society's Green Briar Jam Kitchen is a "living museum" where visitors may view the cooking process first- hand with jams, jellies and preserves made the old-fashioned way as they have been for over 100 years in this historic kitchen. All proceeds help to support the environmental education programs of the Thornton W. Burgess Society and its Green Briar Nature Center.
